SCHEMATA | studio
Schemata was conceived as a practice of design, rather than the transposition thereof. We seek to investigate conditions that at once both pervade and elude one’s consciousness, realizing their potential in physical space.
It is a delving into the brackish confluence of cultural understanding and spatial sequence. We use a palette in which time and memory are our favorite colors.
We embrace a broad range of inquiries which hold the potential for enhancing or altering one’s perception of his surroundings. In dual roles as educators, we fold teaching into the traditional model of practice. Projects often find resonance in applied research. Our work attempts to reconcile the disjunction between academic inquiry and the world in which we live.
SITE [INFINITELY] UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Michael Clapp founded SCHEMATA | studio to pursue a meaningful practice of design through residential and commercial architecture, art production and fabrication, and graphic design explorations. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tennessee Knoxville, and a Master of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He became a registered architect in North Carolina in 2013. He has taught studio design courses at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and has been invited to participate on numerous design critic juries at various institutions.

i
deciphering/excavating
SCHEMATA | studio delves deeply into the contextual basis of each project. An understanding of the underlying forces at work within, around and on a certain site is critical to initiating an intervention, however large in scope.
TIME
ii.
framing
A frame is not only a structural tool to aid in shaping space, but also that through which we view the built environment. Consideration through framing provides an intimate specificity to each project we engage.
SPACE
iii.
articulating
There is poetry in the translation of technical dimensions and orthography into the phenomena of experience. Schemata | studio crafts stories through architecture - ones which reveal histories and chart new pathways.
